E-mail Print
Comic books for Free? Using the words 'comic books' and 'free' in the same sentence is just dangerous! Probably as dangerous as trying to swallow morning breakfast cereal while standing on your head. Untitled Document

On May 5th comic book companies and owners will be dispersing free comic books into the hands of eager collectors for the sixth consecutive year. From Dark Horse to DC and Marvel comics will be raining out of the sky from the big wigs up above to honor this day to millions of readers free of charge. There will be 44 titles to choose from with a wide range of subject matter suitable for all ages. The entire event is designed to attract a new and wider audience to the world of comics. Every year Free Comic Book Day is an event that is sponsored by publishers on two tiers : Gold and silver. Gold Members are the ones that are able to supply comic book stores and venues with the titles that they have promised. They also are mainstay volunteers annually. Where as a Silver sponsor donates comics that are for use for this years event and may not have enough for all of the venues.

Free Comic Book Day participants like Happy Harbor Comics & Toys owner Jay Bardyla has been anticipating the event for months. The event has become so highly anticipated the owner and proprietor joyfully told me of Free Comic Book Day months in advance as he was working on promotion for his Alberta store. At that time it was so top secret that the information he gave me was to be kept a secret until he released it. Sounds very 007 to me! That is part of what makes comics cool. The imagination and creativity involved in these individual projects

A comic book of interest to be available for Free Comic Book Day will be included by Dark Horse Comics in celebration of the day. Their featured publication is entitled The Umbrella Academy. Written by My Chemical Romance front man Gerard Way and penciled by Gabriel Ba of Casanova fame and Dave Stewart of Hellboy. The cover art is done by James Jean of Fables, which somewhat resembles Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas visual thematics.
