For those of us a bit weary of the current MJ media frenzy, here’s a look at what else happened in the entertainment industry …
Headline: Casting news for Deathly Hallows, Dark, and Micky Ward biopic
Bill Nighy can’t contain his excitement. Despite the fact that producers want things to remain hush-hush, Nighy has stated that he will have a role in the final two-part Harry Potter instalment,
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Speculation so far has been that the English actor, whose previous acting credits include Davy Jones in
Pirates of the Caribbean and vampire elder Viktor in the
Underworld trilogy, will portray Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour, an important character and much sought-out role.
Things will be going bump in the night for Australian actor Guy Pearce (
Memento,
The Time Machine) and young actress Bailee Madison (
Bridge to Terabithia). The pair are rumoured to star in an upcoming horror-thriller,
Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. The film, slated for 2011 and produced by Guillermo del Toro, is a remake of 1973 made-for-television movie of the same name which tells the story of a family’s new home overrun by monsters waiting in the dark.
Rising star Amy Adams will join Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg in the David O. Russell film,
The Fighter, a biopic about the life and career of Irish boxer Micky Ward and the brother who helped him the top. Adams will be taking the role of Charlene, a spirited bartender who becomes Micky’s love interest.
Headline: U2 and Alice in Chains are hitting the road U2 commenced their 360° Tour on June 30th and will visit cities across Europe and North America. The legendary Irish band wowed concert-goers in Barcelona during their first gig. Complete with a light show, giant screen, and a circular stage known as “the claw”, the show’s set-up allows the band to give the fans a visual experience like none before. The band is currently promoting their most recent album,
No Line on the Horizon. They will play at the Rogers Centre on September 16th and 17th.

Alt-grunge band Alice in Chains has announced an upcoming tour to promote,
Black Gives Way to Blue, their first studio album since their 1995 self-titled record. The album has a tentative release for early fall and will feature the vocals of new singer William DuVall, who replaced former singer Layne Staley after his untimely death in 2002. The tour is set to begin in mid-July in Detroit and is scheduled to stop at Toronto’s The Opera House on September 15th.
Headline: Film art – Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Lee Daniels’s Precious Sometimes the best way to get people interested is the right marketing. So far, directors Burton and Daniels have generated serious attention to their films through the use of beautiful and expressive posters.
Our first look at Burton’s newly-adapted (and probably quite dark) fantasy film features Johnny Depp as the deranged and slightly grotesque Mad Hatter. In the poster Depp’s Hatter daintily holds a cup and saucer in his festering hands. Other images include Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen.
Alice In Wonderland is scheduled for release in March 2010.
The two posters for
Precious have caused quite a stir with their haunting and striking imagery. Both posters have been heralded as works of art, a hint that “
Precious isn’t up to the usual-usual”. The Lee Daniels film about abuse, discrimination, and body image has already received much praise since its premiere at Sundance this year. The film will hit select theatres in November.
