Running March 5th to March 8th (2009) at the Liberty Grand, the four-day art fair is a juried exhibition and sale. Last year, over 125 emerging and established artists converged and connected with gallerists, collectors, and first-time art buyers. Artists from across North America come to Toronto for what’s being billed as one of the most important art showcases of the year. The Untapped Emerging Artist Competition is an ideal way for younger artists to gain exposure in the industry. It will feature fourteen up-and-coming artists, who will then be given free space in the show. Winners will also receive promotion through the Artist Project Toronto’s website as well as eligibility for the Canadian Art People’s Choice Award, with the winner from that competition receiving a free spot in the project’s 2010 show.

The March edition will be exhibiting the work of 150 independent artists. Jurists at this year’s show will include Melony Ward, the publisher of Canadian Art magazine, and Christian Bernard Singer, a multimedia artist and art instructor who has taught at the Toronto School School of Art and the Ontario College of Art. Betty Ann Jordan, a renowned arts journalist and owner of Art InSite, a company offering two or hour-hour personal arts tours of the city, as well as gallery visits, is part of the jury as well.
The Artist Project, created by MMPI Canada (the trade show producer group responsible for The One of a Kind Craft Christmas and Spring shows and The Artist Project Chicago, among many others) will be cementing its connection with the city’s younger artists by donating its opening night proceeds to SKETCH, a charitable organization that creates art-making opportunities for at-risk and homeless youth.
