Jason MacIsaac, MOTI’s owner, says the exhibit embraces some of the best aspects of European design, and gives Torontonians a chance to see work that usually doesn’t make it to these shores.
Considered one of the world’s leading contemporary designers, Hayon has worked for numerous companies and includes large-scale sculptures, furniture, shoes, lighting, ceramics, and textiles in his design repertoire. His style has been described as something approximating Willy Wonka, Roald Dahl’s beloved character, for its use of colour and unusual shape. He was recently a guest of honour the esteemed Belgian design fair, Interieur Biennnal , and is noted for creating a full-scale mosaic tiled jet for Italian mosaic maestros Bizazza at the Milan Furniture Fair.
Famed Spanish ceramic company Lladró, along with lighting company Metalarte will be working in conjunction with MOTI to show off the designs Hayon has done for them. The Madrid-born designer collaborated with both companies on a number of projects at the Milan Furniture Fair in 2008, and there will be various designs from each project in the gallery. Along with Lladró and Metalarte, Hayon’s collaborations with the prestigious Barcelona-based design company Bd Barcelona, as well as with Camper shoes will also be featured as part of the exhibition.
WORKS, a book on Hayon’s designs, published by Gestalten, will be available at MOTI as part of the exhibition.
