Synthpop power house Lights added to her still relatively new trophy rack by picking up two awards for Best Single and Best Solo Artist. Back stage, the 21-year-old Timmins native seemed more than a little flabbergasted by the attention and the acclaim. “[I’ve been] incredibly surprised to be honest,” she said a little breathlessly. “This is the first kind of awards I’ve won in the last couple of days. So I’m really excited because I only have a six song EP out right now, so that’s a huge honour. Especially with all these people I’m up against in these categories.”![]()
Wonderful. Fulfillment. Satisfaction. Vindication. Those were just some of the adjectives Anvil used to describe their induction into the Indies Hall of Fame. “I believed I would be successful,” said Steve "Lips" Kudlow. “But I never believed, and I don’t mean it negatively, that Canada would embrace this kind of music, or us, and it’s really, really beautiful that they have.”
The band credits the documentary about their life and career for getting their name back out their, but Anvil’s long time drummer Robb Reiner says that credit goes both ways. “If we weren’t around for that many years, there wouldn’t have been a movie to talk about or to write about. The story needed to be told, and it has been told, and it’s great that people are engaging it.”
Hall of Fame presenter Bif Naked had nothing but praise for Canada’s heavy metal godfathers. “It was a real privilege for me to be involved in this kind of awards presentation,” she said. “I’ve known the band for a long time and we had the same manager for a while. I’m just a big fan of those guys.”
Bif Naked added that Anvil had a big influence on her when she started making music. “All of my idols that I looked up to when I was a kid starting out were all guys, you know. […] There weren’t a lot of females in that genre and those guys were my mentors.”
The winner for best group was Toronto’s U.S.S. (or Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker), who were surprised themselves as much as anybody by beating the odds to take the prize. “I’m still trying to co-ordinate our band with my roofing schedule,” said Ashley Boo-Schultz, who credits good karma for their success. “I decided that every moment in my life I’d have good thoughts, speak good words and perform good deeds. And I swear making that decision in my life created the runway to doing stuff like this.”
“We’re karma cats,” adds bandmate Human Kebab. “Even if things don’t work out the way that you wanted to, it’s okay because you’re still going to go to bed tonight and wake up tomorrow.”

Canadian Radio Music Awards:
Sass Jordan hosted a lively midday luncheon that doubled as the CRMAs which had good musical performances and high energy until… Well, I’ll get to that. The big winners of the afternoon were Hedley and Lights, with three and two awards, respectively. The rest of the trophies were handed out pretty evenly, and the whole show ended up with the induction of now Hall of Fame band April Wine.
The performances were pretty good be it Kreesha Turner’s impromptu drumline, or the deep and soulful, Alannah Myles like voice of Crystal Shawanda, the easy country charm of Jaydee Bixby and a surprisingly affecting live performance by Lights. Justin Hines, awarded with the Breakthrough Award, also performed well, winning the crowd with his low-key brand of John Mayer-esque genre of music that I like to call “harmless rock.” Presenters ran the gambit from “the demi-gods of Canadian heavy metal” Anvil to the demi-gods of Langley, B.C. alternative rock, The Februarys.
Overall, it was a pretty smooth show so far as rock and roll awards ceremonies go. That is until the final three awards of the afternoon were given to Hedley, and none of the members of the band were there to accept. It kind of ground the whole affair to a halt because it seemed like organizers were scrambling to find how to move past this little snafu. And Hedley – come on – you couldn’t spare one member of the band to take an hour’s break from making your next album to accept a couple of awards? C’est la vie. Here’s the rest of the winners’ list.
