Georgas' debut EP, The Beat Stuff, was released in January. The title track was the winner of Music BC’s 2008 Songwriting Competition, which she describes as “totally a boost. It got the ball rolling for sure.” The win allowed her to make a demo, which resulted in even more material through the process of recording.![]()
In support of The Beat Stuff, Georgas has been touring nationally, and is set to appear as part of Canadian Music Week, both Friday March 13th (twice; first at Criminal Records, and later the Cameron House) and Saturday March 14th (at the Royal York Hotel).
Describing her sound as a mix of styles, she names 90s favourites The Cranberries and Smashing Pumpkins as influences, along with newer electro-rock bands like Le Tigre and Ratatat. Next year, Georgas will be part of the Cultural Olympiad for the 2010 Winter Olympics; she’ll be playing Vancouver’s Waterfront Theatre next February. “I’m just excited to play the theatre and be part of something like that for sure,” she says with palpable excitement, “I’ll have full band –and it’ll be amazing to have that too.”
Along with the easy-going pop of “Let’s Talk” and the expansive slow-boil of the U2-influenced “All I Need” is the feisty tune “Mama’s Boy,” in which Georgas calls out an ex-boyfriend, singing with aggressive nonchalance, “I guess it’s easy to get over an asshole.” Were there any nerves in exposing the relationship with such blunt ferocity? None whatsoever, Georgas states confidently. “That (song) was inspired by a really dramatic relationship I was in,” she explains, “There was another song I wrote called ‘F*ck You’ –I didn’t have a hard time at all being honest. On (the EP), I have a mix of everything –the asshole-songs and also love songs.”
“I’m just writing the songs –about what’s important for me, about making music. The Beat Stuff is the first and best inside of me, coming out. It’s about what makes me tick.”
