Every year since 1981, Toronto hosts an industry conference and music festival at venues all across the city. The
world’s top and most well-known music professionals, musicians, and bands have attended Canadian Music Week over the years. Past notables have includes David Foster (singer-songwriter/record producer), Chuck D (of Public Enemy fame), Dennis DeYoung (of Styx fame), and Alan Parsons (legendary British record producer/ audio engineer). The conference portion of the week includes a full schedule of discussions, speeches, and seminars concerning the music industry where you can meet and hear from a wide range of professionals. Among these events will be the Digital Media & Music Summit, Radio Active Conference, Executive Music Conference, and Tuneup Music Conference. Several panels and guest speakers will be at the podium; among management personnel, editors, directors, and on-air personalities, KISS’s Gene Simmons will be a keynote speaker on March 12th.
5 Nights, 45 Venues, 500 Artists … that alone should be enough to move you to get your tickets. Specifically, this year’s line-up is nothing short of remarkable, and will make you wish you could be in more than one place at a time. This year’s artists include Revival Dear, The Ting Tings, Tom Cochrane, Modernboys Moderngirls, Sloan, 6 Day Riot, The Trews, Bloc Party, and Young Rival among hundreds of others. This week has also been an extremely important event for up-and-coming bands and artists, who have used the opportunity to perform at this festival as a way of showcasing their talents to both general crowds and the record label reps who frequent the venues to find the next big stars.
As a part of the festival, The Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards, the Canadian Radio Music Awards, The Crystal Awards, and The Indie Awards will all be presented during the week. You can purchase tickets and attend any of these ceremonies to celebrate and recognize some of Canada’s best artists. In 2008, Alanis Morissette was inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame. This year, the inductee will be rock band April Wine.
On March 14th, CMW’s Music for the Screen Film Festival will be showing six pictures. Among the line-up, Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Undead will be making its Canadian premiere while three others will use the festival as its Toronto debut. This will be the film festival’s second year as a part of CMW.
