A new addition to this year's festival was the Docs In Schools program, which brought Hot Docs films and filmmakers to over 7000 students in Toronto area schools. There were also awards given out to the best documentaries at the festival; the awards ceremony took place at the Isabel Badar Theatre the Friday before the festival's close. It was hosted by journalist/documentarian Avi Lewis and awards categories were separated into Canadian and International film. The winner of Best Canadian Feature Documentary went to Shelley Saywell's look at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict called Martyr Street; the Special Jury Prize was given to Greg Hamilton for Mystic Ball, about Myanmar's national sport. In the International category Best Feature was awarded to Ben Hoskins' 37 Uses for a Dead Sheep, about sheep herders in Turkey; the Jury Prize went to My Grandmother's House by Adan Aliaga, which is about the relationship between grandmother and granddaughter. Honoured with a Outstanding Achievement Award was acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog, recently nominated for an Academy Award for Grizzly Man. Audience Awards were announced also and Hamilton's Mystic Ball came in second to A Lion In The House by Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert. |
