Genie Nominations Announced
Quebecers once again lead the pack with Ce qu'il faut pour vivre (The Necessities of Life) picking up the most nominations with a total of eight. The film, which is about the tuberculosis epidemic in Canada’s Far North in the 1950s, won nods for Best Motion Picture, Direction, Screenplay, Leading Actor and Supporting Actress.
Necessities will be facing off for Best Picture with Tout est Parfait (Everything is Fine), which picked up seven nominations in total. The poignant Everything is Fine is about a suburban teenager named Josh who was left out of a suicide pack amongst his friends, and how he copes as the sole survivor. It also has nominations for Directing, Screenplay and Supporting Actor and Actress.
Tied for third place with six nominations a piece are Passchendaele, Fugitive Pieces, Amal and Maman est chez le coiffeur (Mommy is at the Hairdresser’s). Other notable Canadian films up for a prize are the family drama The Stone Angel, Deepa Mehta’s latest Heaven on Earth, the mob dramedy Real Time and the controversial Young People F***ing. Meanwhile, My Winnipeg and Up the Yangtze are both up for Best Documentary.
The award ceremony moves away from Toronto this year, and will be held at the Canada Aviation Museum in Ottawa. The hardware will be handed out on April 4th, and if you can’t be there in person, then you can watch who gets what Genie when the awards are broadcast live on Canwest/Global.
“Canada’s passion for provocative and insightful cinema resonates through many of this year’s nominees,” said Sara Morton, CEO of the ACCT. “With the Genie Awards taking place in Ottawa for the first time, I think it’s particularly appropriate that we have such a strong field of both French and English films.”
