Having hooked up with previous friends and members of their past bands, the newest punk rock n roll genius band Chop Suicide came together. With members Danyell, Staci T. Rat and Stephane DeBernardi and the new hunt for a perfectly suited drummer, this band’s success has surpassed many in such a short period of time.
Chop Suicide first got together a year and a half ago in May 2007 to began the writing process. After recording a short 5 song demo not a month later, they knew they were serious. Later that year they started bothering previous rhythm member of Red Light Rippers, Stephane DeBernardi to join the crew. After being bothered for a period DeBernardi decided to join up because he missed the rock n roll scene, and because of his love for the ladies, he gave himself no choice.
Already with 30 plus shows under their belt including a tour in the UK, Chop Suicide is successful and well on their way to reaching the tops of the music charts.
Personally I knew the entire time what was going on with this crew because I’m friends with the great DeBernardi, and therefore, getting together an interview with this band was less than difficult. Enjoy!
| Lucid Forge: How long have you guys been around? Staci T. Rat: Danyell and I first got together in May 2007 to start writing. We recorded a 5 song demo a month later, in June 2007, to use to find a rhythm section. I always knew that I wanted to play with Steph, because I was in a band with him before, so I just kept harassing him until he finally couldn’t avoid us anymore – haha and we finally found our drummer after 5 months of auditions. He actually lived five hours away when we met, so he relocated to Toronto in January 2008. We started rehearsing in February 2008 and started playing live on March 30, 2008. We went over to the UK in June and have played over 30 shows already in our first 5 months. LF: Where did you come up with the name of the band? STR: It is the name of a chapter in the book, ‘Hollywood Babylon’ LF: Has there been lots of transition in members? If so what was the issue? Stéphane DeBernardi: We recently had to let Kevin (drummer) go. It was hard decision to make, but unfortunately had to be done. LF: Do you have any issues with the current members? SD: Nope, everything is just peachy..... haha | ![]() |
LF: What is any tour memory in particular that stands out for you?
STR: Danyell punched somebody in the face in the middle of our set in Aberdeen.
SD: Ya, that was crazy! I remember looking over and seeing Danyell jumping off stage. She started throwing punch's left & right, and didn't miss a beat. I wonder if that's on YouTube somewhere? HAHA!
LF: Is there a specific genre of music you would categorize yourselves?
STR: Kick Ass Rock and Roll
SD: Extra Saucy..... kick ass rock and roll
LF: Do you have any cd's?
STR: we have our 5 song demo and you can also find those songs on quite a few compilation CD’s in the UK
They also have the five songs on their myspace found at http://www.myspace.com/chopsuicideonline.

LF: What is a favorite song that each of you like in particular?
STR: Today I am going to have to go with “Here to Stay”
SD: “Panik Attack.” It has a mean punch.
Danyell: “Dances with cougars,” but it’s not yet recorded.
LF: How do you come up with lyrics?
SD: Danyell usually, but Staci's been known to come up with the goods as well from time to time.
LF: What do you base songs on?
D: either the songs are about life experiences, or just mocking life.
LF: What musical influences do you each have?
STR: What got me started was AC/DC. I would say right now Swedish indie bands are influencing me a lot. There is some amazing stuff coming outta there!
SD: I remember that day in the record store back in the 80's. I had Motley Crue's Shout at the Devil in one hand, and Huey Lewis's Sports in the other. My mom looked at them both, and said I could get Motley because they were shouting "at" the devil. I couldn't get the Huey Lewis because of the song "I want a new drug". THANK GOD!!!! Who knows how I would have turned out?
D: Growing up I was influenced by Nirvana and Hole
![]() | LF: Is this the only project that you are each involved in right now or is there others? What are they if so? STR: I will be recording a solo CD in the next few months. It will be ready in January/February 2009. There will be more info on our MySpace profile as it is available :) LF: What do each of you enjoy most about music? SD: The girls! That's what got me started playing in the first place. D: Playing live, touring, but mostly what I really enjoy is when the audience is singing along to the songs. LF: What types of venues do you tend to have shows? SD: mostly clubs, there might be the occasional hall over in the UK |
LF: Anything more you would like to add?
SD: we are currently looking for a drummer. Please contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
Now that we know the inside story on your band, we are going to take a little turn on the interview.
LF: How do you feel about the Canadian Music Industry?
SD: I hate the fact that to be recognized in Canada you need to make an impact elsewhere first. Only then does Canada notices you.
LF: What in particular do you agree or disagree with in regards to the industry?
SD: I would love to see more funding available for indie bands. Some more Canadian content on the radio & much music would be great too.
LF: Is there anything you each would do to improve the industry?
SD: My hands are tied. We have to just keep moving forward.
D: Improve the industry? I'm still trying to improve myself!
