Daniela Nardi - the Rose Tattoo

Music

Artist Daniela Nardi
Label DNA Music
Score 4

The smooth, sweet tones of Toronto-based singer/songwriter Daniela Nardi are soft and clear in her recently released sophomore album, The Rose Tattoo, which comes just shy of five years after her debut, One True Thing. With its jazzy, soulful tones coupled with Nardi’s sultry vocals, this album is settled, straight, and simple.

The creation and production of this second record occurred and was inspired by a very difficult time in lives of Daniela Nardi and her family. While writing the tracks for the album, Nardi’s mother, Rosie, was battling cancer, a struggle she endured for three years. This time of hardship enables Nardi to delve deeper into her own feelings and emotions, which is evident in the mood of the album. During this period, Nardi spent much time with her mother, which further influenced her song writing.

Described as “a journey of passion, finesse, intensity, and artistry”, this release is emotional and well conducted. Nardi’s piano work is subdued and proficient, while her lyrics are natural and heartfelt. The percussion, saxophone, and drum work on the tracks are excellent, and are exceptionally notable in “Magdalena Blue” and “Book of Days”. “485” is by far the catchiest song on the album with its high energy and jazz tones. The track “Rosetta”, a tribute to her late mother, is particularly heartfelt, with its traditional opening and her honest lyrics.

The Rose Tattoo also serves as a platform for Nardi’s experimentation with combining Nu Jazz and electronica, which is explored in the two bonus tracks. Working with award-winning producer Greg Kavanagh, Nardi described the sound they created as “[taking] the listeners to a different place by bridging the old with the new”.

Daniela Nardi’s appeal is contemporary and mature. Her talents as a musician and singer are well performed on these twelve charming tracks. It is just the right score for a quiet evening at home with a nice glass of wine.
