Score 4

Alberto Rigoni has composed an eclectic group of tracks that range from quintessential heavy rock to improvisational jazz. Something Different, which was released worldwide early this year on February 15th, marks the debut solo album by this talented bass guitarist, whose other credits includes being a member of the progressive rock group Twinspirits. The album has already received airplay on RAI 3, the national Italian radio channel.

This record definitely has universal appeal. The variety of genres Rigoni is able to harness is pleasantly surprising. “The Factory” starts the album off with electronica, and slowly morphs into guitar-heavy, hard rock. “SMS” has a sound that you might think you’ve heard before, and is reminiscent of Flea’s talents during the early period of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The only two tracks to feature vocals could not be further apart in mood, rhythm and energy. While the funky female vocals of “BASSex” takes us back to the 80s, the edgy hardcore sound and male vocals of “Roller Coaster” are unmistakably metal, complete with a solid bass solo.

“Sweet Tears” is definitely the most constructed and layered track. With its ambient influence and strong keyboard accompaniment, this final track acts as a launching pad for Rigoni’s potential as both a musician and a composer.

Rigoni described the album as being without “scheme, rule or trend… [He] tried to reach a freer and more poetic musical expression that matched [his] melodic sensitivity.” His desire for the tracks on this release to be accessible and appreciated by all kinds of music lovers was certainly fulfilled. There is something on this skilfully created, wide-ranging album for everyone.

Those who have had the opportunity to listen to this debut collection are surely eagerly awaiting a sophomore solo project by Rigoni, which I hope will be just as experimental and resultant of Rigoni’s obvious talent as Something Different.
