Wes Anderson moves on from foxes to friendship![]()
With high-praising already being said about Fantastic Mr. Fox (hitting North American theatres on November 25), Wes Anderson is reportedly back at work on his next cinematic venture – a remake of The Rosenthaler Suite. The acclaimed director also has his sights set on another remake, this one an English version of the 2006 French film Mon meilleur ami (My Best Friend). Although some are sceptical of Anderson’s ability to create worthy remakes of the highly successful originals, his fans are well aware of his penchant for amazing casting. While I think most of us would love to see Bill Murray as a crotchety antiques dealer with no real friends, rumours are circulating that George Clooney might be grabbing the lead role.
Bob Dylan traipsing around in a grey wig? Yeah …
To bring more attention to his recent album, Christmas in The Heart, Bob Dylan decided to star in a music video for the track Must Be Santa. While the video plays at just under three minutes, I assure you that it will be three of the most bizarre minutes of the holiday season. Bob Dylan and a large group of strange-looking drunken revellers enjoy a n old fashioned rendition of the song while they laugh and dance around a decorated mansion. Bob Dylan stands out amongst the crowd in a silvery, shoulder-length wig covered by a Santa hat. No matter how odd things seem, I wouldn’t be surprised if this sort of party is a regular occurrence at the Dylan homestead. I think I’ll let the video speak for itself.
New music and a tour from the good boys of Sloan
Canadian alt-rockers Sloan have announced the details of their latest EP, Hit and Run, available in stores on November 23rd. To promote the record, Sloan’s current North American, stopping at venues such Detroit, Brooklyn, Chicago, Winnipeg, Calgary, and Vancouver. The title of the record was inspired by bassist Chris Murphy’s recent accident. It happened last summer while Murphy, on his bicycle, was struck by a car, and the driver didn’t stop to help him. “Take It Upon Yourself”, one of the five new songs, can be heard on the band’s MySpace page.
Oasis – Noel Gallagher = new band?
Liam Gallagher is excited about creating new music with band mates Gem Archer, Andy Bell, and Chris Sharrock – otherwise known as every member of Oasis, except Noel. Liam recently spoke with Italian journalists about the new band, and how their music is already better than anything Oasis has ever produced. For those people who believe the “new” group will be exactly the same without brother Noel, I should point out that Noel was the primary songwriter for the now defunct band. With that in mind, new music out of this still unnamed group (amusing reports state Liam was considering the name No Noels Allowed aren’t true) might sound very different.
On a final note:
One of Toronto’s smaller cinemas, the Carlton, will be closing its doors on December 6. The small-screen multiplex, according to representatives of Cineplex Odeon, is the kind of venue movie-goers now stay away from. These days, people are apparently more interested in large-number seating arrangements and high-tech sound systems. The small venue opened its doors on Yonge and Carlton in 1948. Its most recent restoration/relocation has been in operation since 1981 and had been known for featuring Canadian, independent, and art-house films. The Carlton, you will be missed.
