A week of news from the arts and pop culture

Headline: Has Oasis split for good?
Since the British rock/Britpop band Oasis hit the scene in the early 90s, brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher have been notorious for slandering other bands, for proclaiming themselves to be the best, and most of all, for constantly (and violently) being at each other’s throats. This time, it seems Noel has called it quits with the band and his cantankerous sibling for good. An official statement was posted on the band’s website with Noel addressing his fans with a brief explanation and sincere apologies. Noel’s departure on August 28th after a backstage fight that involved the destruction of Noel’s guitar by Liam (how fitting), meant the cancellation of shows in Paris and Milan, leaving everyone wondering, what now?
The band, who recently wrapped up a tour promoting their most recent album
Dig Out Your Soul, will reportedly continue on without Noel, who was their lead guitarist, vocalist, and primary songwriter. Noel has expressed his intentions of focusing on a solo career now. With a history peppered with falling-outs, disputes and squabbles, no one will surprised if Oasis, Noel included, is back in the studio within the next few months. We’ll hope with fingers crossed, anyway.
Headline: Warner Bros. takes DC Comics to the corporate level

Considering the immense success of films like
Iron Man,
The Incredible Hulk, and the
X-Men and
Spider–Man franchises, (as well as the recently announced acquisition of rival Marvel Comics by Disney) it seems comic adaptations will continue to be the root of many blockbusters. The execs at Warner Brothers Entertainment Inc. know good business when they see it and have officially created DC Entertainment Inc., a company that will “fully realize the power and value of the DC Comics brand and characters across all media and platforms”.
Warner Bros. hopes to bring several much-beloved characters from the DC universe to the big screen over the coming years. With 75 years of DC comics to choose from, the possibilities seem endless (and quite profitable) for the industry giant.
Jonah Hex is currently in production, while upcoming projects focused on other DC characters (Teen Titans, Lobo, and Deadman to list a few) are rumoured to be in development. Diane Nelson, who already manages the unbelievably successful
Harry Potter film franchise, will head up the company.
Headline: TIFF has begun
The 34th Toronto International Film Festival is finally underway. With hundreds of movies to screen, and even more special guests and patrons to satisfy, the festival organizers will certainly be busy over the next week. The most recent news from TIFF headquarters was the announcement of the governors for this year’s Talent Lab, a four-day developmental programme for 25 lucky young filmmakers who will get the chance to learn from and discuss with director Danny Boyle, Canadian actor/director Don McKellar, director/performing artist Miranda July, and novelist/screenwriter John Collee. Talent Lab began on the 9th and will conclude on the 12th. To all of you with tickets in hand, ready to partake in film and performances from across the globe, here’s to hoping you come across a gem or two. Happy viewing everyone!
