![]() | Yo Joe! IDW Publishing has reached a deal with Hasbro to re-launch the adventures of those Real American Heroes G.I. Joe, beginning with issue #0 this October. IDW’s plans for the franchise include bring back the acclaimed writer of the Marvel G.I. Joe comic from the 80s, Larry Hama. Hama will be penning the new regular series, G.I. Joe: Origins, which will re-introduce the Joes and their enemy, Cobra, to a new generation of readers. The second new series, simple called G.I. Joe, will be written by Chuck Dixon and drawn by Robet Atkins and will be a continuation of Hama’s old series as G.I. Joe faces off against a new threat introduced in issue zero. The final new-series will be a limited one called G.I. Joe: Cobra, and will be a four-part story about the snake-themed terrorist group scripted by Christos Gage and Mike Costa. All series will launch in the first quarter of 2009 a few months ahead of the new G.I. Joe movie due next summer. |
Millar talks Ultimate Avengers
Former Ultimate X-Men and Ultimates scribe Mark Millar is returning to the universe he helped co-create sometime next year with the release of Ultimate Avengers. Millar says that the title has been in the works since he worked on the first series of The Ultimates, splitting off Captain America and the core team to form the Avengers while Nick Fury creates a new team of Super-Soldiers for in The Ultimates. “I always wanted those characters -- Ultimate Cap and Ultimate Tony -- to go off and actually fight Ultimate Kang and Ultimate Red Skull or whatever. I wanted to do some kick-ass adventures with these heroes because we really never saw them do that kind of stuff. And I also wanted it to be non-traditional. I think 'The Ultimates' was a sort of reinvention of what you would expect from a superhero origin story. So now I want to reinvent how we do superheroes fighting super-villains. I want to do something different with it." Ultimate Avengers will be released in 2009 after the big Ultimatum crossover starting this Fall.
Missing All-Star Batman this week?
The latest issue of All-Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder was supposed to come out this week, and if you can’t find a copy, here’s the reason why thanks to Newsarama:
| “Dear Diamond Customer: “Please be advised that copies of DC Comics’ ALL-STAR BATMAN & ROBIN THE BOY WONDER #10 (FEB080203-4D) may be included in your September 10 shipment. “At DC’s request, please do not place this book out for sale to your customers. Instead, please destroy any copies that you receive. You will be credited for these copies on your September 17 invoice. “Diamond apologizes for any inconvenience this creates for you or your customers. If you have additional questions, please contact your Diamond Customer Service Representative. Thank you.” | ![]() |
Why is DC asking these issues be destroyed rather than put out on the rack? Well, apparently the black bars used to censor out the dirty words used in the book didn’t entirely cover the words in question. The rumour is that a different shade of black was used for the censor bar than was used for the lettering. It looked fine on the computer but when in was printed out, the words were only partially covered. I guess next time, Frank Miller should just use the old-fashioned way of covering swear words: random keyboard symbols, like “%$#&@,” for example.
Comic Movie News
![]() | And Caine’s source? Apparently the same studio execs. “I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make another one?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘S**t, they’ve done it again!’” [Laughs] Meanwhile, the lingering question of summer seems answered once and for all. While doing press for his upcoming dramatic turn in Towelhead, Eckhart was asked point-blank by Heather Newgen about the ultimate fate of Two-Face at the end of the Dark Knight, and here’s what was said: |
Q: Is Harvey Dent alive?
Aaron Eckhart: No. He is dead as a door nail.
Q: So he's not coming back?
Eckhart: He ain't coming back baby!
Q: I was hoping he would.
Eckhart: No. I asked Chris [Nolan] that question and he goes, "You're dead" before I could even get the question out of my mouth. "Hey Chris, am I?" "You're dead!" Alright, cool.
Spidey 4 a Done Deal
Nikki Finke, in her column, recently wrote that sources are telling her that director Sam Raimi and actor Tobey Maguire are now both locked in for not just Spider-Man 4, but a fifth film as well. The two will be shot back to back in order to solve certain budgetary and scheduling issues. The script by Zodiac screenwriter James Vanderbilt seems to have been good enough to attract both Raimi and Maguire back for another, with Kirsten Dunst reportedly in negotiations to re-appear as Spider-Girlfriend Mary Jane Watson. As for the villain, all signs point to the Lizard, because Finke notes in her article: “I am told, however, that ‘once you find out whom the villain is, you’ll know who’s playing it.’” Dylan Baker appeared as Dr. Curt Connors in Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3. Sony is looking at a May 2011 release date, which could but the film in competition with fellow Marvel hero Captain America.
No Cap for Smith
In another weird MTV-cited casting rumour, Miracle at St. Anna star Derek Luke said that Will Smith was up for the role of Captain America. The WHITE Captain America. Now there was a mini-series called Truth several years ago that showed the previously untold tale of the first Captain America, who was black, but the Cap movie is about Steve Rogers. Marvel later refuted the rumour on Ain’t It Cool News, but word is that the studio is looking for a big star to play the part.
Warners wants darker DC films, more like Marvel
Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov wants for DC Comics-based films and he wants them fast. He told the Wall Street Journal that he wants to get at least four in theatres by the year 2011, and amongst his plans is, like Marvel Films, do several stand alone pictures with the heroes leading up to a Justice League movie. Also, given the success of the Dark Knight, Robinov went on to explain that these movies should carry a darker edge, even the next Superman. Well, whatever Robinov’s plans are, he doesn’t have long to get them into gear and there’s so much work to do. Just looking down the list, no one seems sure if Bryan Singer is doing a Superman Returns sequel, nobody’s heard anything from Wonder Woman since Joss Whedon left and Nolan still isn’t even locked for his third turn at Batman. And it sounds like Robinov just put the kibosh on George Miller’s Justice League movie… Well, good luck to him.
When’s Judge-ment Day for the Watchmen?
U.S. District Court Judge Gary Allen Feess has set a January 6, 2009 trial date to hear 20th Century Fox’s copyright infringement case against Warner Bros. over the upcoming release of Watchmen. Fox claims that Warners interfered with contract rights between them and Largo Entertainment, which could have lead to the adaptation of the Alan Moore graphic novel being made at Fox. The judge also told Fox to forgo any attempt to get a preliminary injunction against Warners to stop the release of the film, which was a worry for the studio with a release date in March, and the expectation that a trial date wouldn’t be set until May or June. But because the issues involved on this litigation are too complicated to be resolved on an interim basis, Judge Feess has ordered both studios to start building a factual record and to expedite discovery and depositions immediately.

![]() | Runaways #1 Terry Moore and Humberto Ramos Marvel Comics True, the seemingly endless delays with Joss Whedon’s run on Runaways was indicative of some of the most annoying trends in modern comics and painful because he was such a good fit for the book. But nothing could be as painful as cracking open this new Runaways and being bored. The series created by Brian K. Vaughan has lost its spark, and while the team is perfectly free to feel listless after their return to LA, the book covering their exploits shouldn’t feel the same way. Much of the issue is spent with Chase seeking employment from some obnoxious shock jock, and the story is book-ended by some aliens looking for Karolina. I guess their involvement in “Secret Invasion” left no lasting effects because nobody mentions that big battle in New York they were involved in either once. Even the normally jubilant art of Ramos didn’t elevate my mood of general ennui in regards to this new series. Oh, how the potentially mighty have fallen. Let me know when Vaughan’s back. |
![]() | Detective Comics #848 Paul Dini and Dustin Nguyen DC Comics One of Dini’s many talents as a Batman writer is that he can play the classic villains like no one else. In this issue we get Catwoman and Scarecrow, along with the return of everyone’s favourite new addition to the rogues’ gallery, Hush. I love the complexity of the “R.I.P.”storyline. I love the mystery to it. I love how the mysterious Black Glove is using all of Batman’s habits and relationships against. It feels to me like the Batman editors have gone back to “Knightfall” and are trying to do it right; a lot of the dialogue and story cues seem to say that. That’s cool, I just hope there isn’t a cop out in the offing like at the end of “Knightfall.” |
| The Amazing Spider-Man #568-570 Dan Slott and John Romita Jr. Marvel Comics I remember in New Avengers #2, when the Sentry takes the Venom spawn Carnage into space and tears him apart, you can practically hear the collective cheer of 90s suffering fan boys. I couldn’t help but think of all that symbiote nonsense while reading this storyline. Well the recent parts about the Mac Gargan Venom fighting the now white-coloured, Anti-Venom Eddie Brock. It’s cool to look at, for sure, and if you’re going to go with a Spidey artist, it’s impossible to get much better than Romita, but I was honestly kind of bored by the battle of the long-tongued villains. All that Machiavelli stuff with Norman Osborn though is gold, as is the new integration of post-“Brand New Day” Spider-Man into the new normal of the Marvel U. |
